California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized President Donald Trump, pointing to the growing closeness between India, China, and Russia. He contrasted this with Trump’s focus on deploying the National Guard instead of addressing the emerging alliance.
On Sept. 2, Newsom posted a video showing Indian Prime Minister Modi with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, laughing and walking together at the SCO Summit held in Tianjin, China.
Sharing the clip on X, Newsom mocked Trump, writing, “But have no fear, Trump is sending the Guard to Chicago.”

The heads of the three eastern superpowers met between Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 and discussed multiple issues including mutual cooperation and American dominance in the world order.
President Jinping openly rebuked the "bullying behavior" of the US led world order, in light of the ongoing tariff war and 50 percent tariffs imposed on India. Trumps tariff policies seems to have backfired with long-term foes, India and China, calling a truce and Indian Prime Minister Modi describing the two most populous countries as "partners, not rivals”.

Newsom, believed to be a top contender for the Oval Office in the 2028 elections, has long been critical of Trump's deployment of National Guard in Washington and threats to deploy the federal force in Chicago.
Over 2,000 guards were controversially deployed in Washington and now Trump is threatening to extend its coverage to Chicago and New York. This has led to large scale protests and strong condemnations from different sections.
