Actor, writer and podcast host Sonali Kulkarni spoke about parenting, identity and raising children during a live virtual conversation hosted by the Marathi Aai Initiative (MAI), a nonprofit organization for Marathi mothers in the United States.
The session, held on May 9 and released on MAI TV's YouTube channel on June 27, brought together more than 100 MAI members from across the U.S.
The discussion focused on parenting challenges, including raising grounded children, navigating social media and maintaining mental and physical well-being. Kulkarni also reflected on the lessons parents learn from their children during the conversation, which organizers described as an unscripted interactive session.
Speaking about her daughter, Kaveri, Kulkarni said, "Majhya hatat aleli Kaveri hi product nahi ahe, manus ahe." She added that her daughter is "not a product I am leading, but a person of her own caliber and opinions, whom I am raising."
Kulkarni also said, "I am a normal mother and I am not the most important person in her life… (and I need not be)."
When asked about her inspiration, Kulkarni credited her mother, recalling how she ran a home-based daycare while supporting the family. "I wonder how she could make me feel so comfortable and secure," Kulkarni said, reflecting on her mother's ability to care for the children in the daycare while maintaining the same attention and affection toward her daughter.
'Sayli Natu,' co-founder of MAI, said, "Sonali Tai brought honesty into the room, very precious coming from a public figure of her stature, yet it felt easy and natural speaking with her." She said Kulkarni had expressed interest in connecting with the organization from their first conversation and described the event as an exchange between mothers.
'Kshitija Karmarkar,' MAI's co-founder, said members "felt at home" during the session. She said Kulkarni's openness and willingness to share her experiences made the discussion meaningful for participants and thanked her for spending time with the community.
The Mother's Day Eve conversation took place May 9 and is available for streaming on MAI TV's YouTube channel. More than 100 MAI members from across the United States attended the event.
