The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) observed Gandhi Jayanti on Oct. 2, calling attention to Mahatma Gandhi’s commitment to nonviolence, truth, and justice. The group also praised the “Voices of the Republic” conference, held in Washington on Oct. 1 and 2, for reflecting on the legacies of Gandhi and India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
IAMC, which describes itself as the largest organization of Indian Muslims in the United States, said Gandhi’s principles of pluralism, inclusivity, and moral courage remain essential at a time when democracy and secular values in India face challenges.

The “Voices of the Republic” conference gathered scholars, activists, and policymakers to discuss Gandhian and Nehruvian ideas of secularism, nonviolence, and social justice. IAMC stated that the event emphasized how these traditions remain critical to strengthening Indian democracy.
“At a time when India’s pluralistic fabric is under assault, Gandhi’s teachings remind us that peace and justice can never be separated, and that the measure of a nation lies in how it treats its most vulnerable,” IAMC President Mohammed Jawad said.
In its statement, IAMC reaffirmed its commitment to uphold Gandhian and Nehruvian values in promoting equality, justice, and communal harmony. It urged people to recommit to the principles of nonviolence, truth, and justice in the face of contemporary challenges.
