FIA's Bharat Beyond Borders gala wraps up I-Day festivities

Indian community leaders pledged 300 wheelchairs for differently-abled children in India, underscoring a strong commitment to social responsibility.

The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) NY-NJ-CT-NE concluded its India Day celebrations with the Bharat Beyond Borders Independence Gala at Cipriani Wall Street on August 17. 

The event highlighted the theme of global Indian identity, marking the community’s cultural presence and contribution beyond national borders.

More than 600 people attended the gala, including members of the Indian-American community, officials, and invited guests. Distinguished attendees included Binaya S. Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York; New York City Mayor Eric Adams; U.S. Representative Shri Thanedar of Michigan; and Indian Member of Parliament Satnam Singh Sandhu. 

Bollywood actors Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda, who led the India Day Parade as Grand Marshals earlier in the day, were also present.

The program also included recorded video messages from U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who extended greetings on the occasion of India’s Independence Day.

The evening program featured cultural performances combining Indian dance and music with Broadway-style acts. A Mexican Mariachi band was also part of the entertainment, reflecting cross-cultural participation.

Dinner was arranged by Andaaz Restaurant, offering a range of Indian dishes. A large dessert section, described as one of the longest in New York City, was among the highlights of the menu.

A philanthropic initiative was announced during the gala, with Indian community leaders pledging the donation of 300 wheelchairs for differently-abled children in India.
