The Indian American Seniors Association (IASA) of Clifton unfurled the Indian tricolor at Clifton City Hall on Aug. 17, to mark the country's 79th Independence Day.
The program opened with spiritual invocations, followed by an introductory address from Mahi Patel on the significance of India’s independence. IASA president Bharat Rana, in his remarks, reflected on the community’s role in carrying forward the values of India’s freedom movement while contributing to American society.

“For us, as seniors, this moment holds deep meaning. Many of us have seen India’s journey — from its struggles for freedom to its emergence as the world’s largest democracy and a global leader,” Rana said.
“By raising our flag here today, side by side with the American flag, we celebrate not only our heritage but also the unity of cultures, the friendship between our two great nations, and the shared values of democracy, diversity, and opportunity,” he added.
The ceremony paid tribute to India’s freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmi Bai, and Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
The event drew more than 200 community members and was attended by several elected officials and dignitaries. Among them were Mahesh Yadav, Consul of Community Affairs at the Consulate General of India in New York; Congresswoman Nellie Pou; Clifton Mayor Ray Grabowski; former Clifton Mayor James Anzaldi; and Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh.
Members of the Clifton Board of Education, Assemblywoman Alixon Gill, and representatives from the offices of Senator John McKeon, Assemblywoman Rosy Bagolie, and Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter were also present.
During the event, Senator Pou, Assemblywoman Bagolie, and Senator Benjie recognized Bharat Rana with awards for his service to the community.
The program concluded with a community meal that included pav bhaji, coffee, cookies, and brownies.
