New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar wore a design by Indian American label Soara at New York Fashion Week on Sept. 10.
As the first Indian American woman elected to state office, Rajkumar honored her roots as she took part in Style Across the Aisle, an event that brought together New York’s civic and cultural leaders to highlight emerging designers.

“I walk the runway every day on the streets of New York, and this week I did it on a bigger stage,” Rajkumar said. “Just as fashion is about expressing identity and confidence, my role in public service is about empowering every New Yorker to stand tall and proud. My goal is a state where everyone walks a wide-open runway to opportunity.”
Soara, co-founded by Surya Garg and Madhu Powar in 2024, draws inspiration from South Asian heritage while incorporating sustainable practices and artisan craftsmanship from India.
The label emphasizes natural fabrics, ethical production, and a direct-to-customer model. Like Rajkumar, Garg is the daughter of Indian American immigrants, underscoring the cultural connections reflected in the show.
Style Across the Aisle has rapidly become an anticipated fixture of Fashion Week, featuring designers from across the city and models from New York’s political spectrum. This year’s edition raised more than $75,000 for charitable causes while celebrating small businesses, diversity, and community.
