The lanes of Chittaranjan Park—New Delhi’s “Mini Bengal”—came alive on Maha Ashtami evening on Tuesday, Sept. 30, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a surprise visit to one of the capital’s most iconic Durga Puja celebrations.

Arriving amid heightened security and rhythmic dhaak beats, the Prime Minister stepped into the heart of south Delhi’s cultural hub, where nearly every park hosts a pandal during the nine-day Navratri festivities.

Select devotees, many dressed in traditional Bengali attire, watched as Modi offered pushpanjali to Goddess Durga, joining priests in the chanting of mantras.

He also visited the famous Kali Bari temple, a spiritual anchor for Delhi’s Bengali community, where he performed an aarti, holding aloft the ceremonial lamp as conch shells echoed through the courtyard.

“The celebrations at Chittaranjan Park truly reflect the spirit of unity and cultural vibrancy in our society. Prayed for everyone’s happiness and wellbeing,” the Prime Minister later wrote on X, sharing glimpses of the moment.

What made the evening particularly special, residents say, wasn’t just the political significance of the visit, but the emotional bridge it built.

Traffic diversions were announced earlier in the day as Resident Welfare Associations urged locals to cooperate with security protocols. But no amount of barricading could dampen the festive buzz — food stalls serving kathi rolls and mishti doi remained crowded, while children danced to folk drums just metres from the VIP enclosure.
