A community fundraiser has been launched to support the family of 55-year-old Indian-origin Arvi Singh Sagoo, who died after an assault in central Edmonton earlier this month.
According to police, officers responded to reports of an assault near 109 Street and 100 Avenue around 2:20 a.m. on Oct. 19. When they arrived, they found Sagoo unconscious. He was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
According to news reports, Sagoo assaulted after he opposed a stranger urinating on his car.
Police said Sagoo died on Oct. 24. The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Unit continues to investigate, and additional charges are pending.

Kyle Papin, 40, was arrested shortly after the incident and initially charged with aggravated assault. Police said Papin and Sagoo did not know each other. Papin’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 4. An autopsy for Sagoo was scheduled for Oct. 28 with the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office.
In the wake of Sagoo’s death, a fundraiser organized by Vincent Ram has raised more than $4,400 CAD of its $10,000 goal through 33 donations. The campaign describes Sagoo as “a very kind and loving father” and seeks to provide financial assistance for funeral costs, daily expenses, and future needs for his two children, including education and emotional support.
“The funds raised will be directed toward funeral expenses, daily living expenses, and a foundation for the children's future needs,” the campaign states. It adds that the goal is not only to relieve financial pressure but also to “create a sense of community and support around a family in need.”
The page urges community members to “keep Arvi Singh in your prayers in this tough time.”
Police have not released further details about the incident or potential additional charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
