Canada has been witnessing a wave of violence against cinema halls showcasing Indian movies, with repeated attacks and threats causing many theatres to stop screening Indian films. In the most recent series of violence, an Oakville theatre suffered two attacks in the same week and thereafter cancelled showing all South Asian movies there.

During the wee hours of Oct. 2, as India celebrated Gandhi Jayanti and the country's ideals of non-violence, an individual allegedly opened fire at the entrance of Film.ca theatre in Oakville. This came days after the Sept. 25 attack on the theatre where two individuals allegedly used a flammable liquid to ignite a fire at the exterior entrance doors of the theatre.
