An Indian-origin trucker has been charged after Canadian border officers seized about 266.4 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine from his truck at the border crossing.

The driver, identified as Kulbir Singh, 29, of Woodstock, Ontario, was arrested on Feb. 4 after his commercial truck, entering Canada from the United States, was referred for secondary inspection at the Blue Water Bridge port of entry,  Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said.

During an examination of the trailer, border services officers, assisted by a detector dog, discovered 16 duffle bags containing suspected methamphetamine.

Singh was transferred, along with the seized drugs, to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The RCMP has charged him with importation of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The case is before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia. Authorities said the charges are subject to validation by the court and the investigation remains ongoing.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the seizure highlighted the role of border agencies in preventing serious crime. “Our government’s top priority is to ensure the safety and security of Canadians,” he said, adding that border services officers serve as Canada’s first line of defence against transnational crime.
