Indian author Shanbhag shortlisted for UK literary prize

Vivek Shanbhag’s novel joins diverse fiction shortlist at James Tait Black Prizes this year

Indian author Vivek Shanbhag’s ‘Sakina’s Kiss’ has been shortlisted for the fiction category of the UK’s James Tait Black Prizes, organizers announced. The annual awards, judged by University of Edinburgh scholars and literature students, received a record number of submissions this year. The winners are set to be announced in May.

Shanbhag is a Kannada-language writer, novelist and playwright with ten works of fiction and three plays to his name. His writing has been translated into English and several Indian languages. He also served as editor of the literary magazine ‘Desha Kaala’ for seven years. His 2013 novella ‘Ghachar Ghochar’ brought him wide international recognition, and he was a writer in residence at the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program in 2016.
