The road to the White House is not only laced with political roadblocks but also with heartbreaks. For the most part candidates are aware of the minefields along with the way, only that some read the writing on the wall carefully.

Others pretend that messages are certainly intended only for others, a sense of delusion that comes to haunt down the line. The Michigan primary is a case in point. It had clear messages to President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump as well as for the lone contender for the Republican nomination, Nikki Haley.
