Indian-American Representative Ami Bera has announced $7,589,194 in funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support Sacramento's city and county housing authorities.

The funds were allocated through HUD’s Capital Fund Program to aid local public housing authorities in their initiatives to construct, renovate, and modernize public housing developments.

“I am pleased to announce this vital funding to support public housing developments in Sacramento County,” said Rep. Ami Bera in a statement on May.22.

“This funding will help support the development and modernization of public housing throughout our community, ensuring more of our residents have access to a safe and affordable place to live. We must leverage every tool at our disposal to build on these efforts and ensure that all Americans have access to the safe and affordable housing they need to thrive.”

While most households are allocating a smaller portion of their budget to essentials like food and clothing, the proportion of their budget spent on housing has risen. According to Econofact, a non-partisan publication, the average cost of housing has increased by $5,000 per year since 1984.

In 2023, approximately 250,000 Americans were estimated to be without homes, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, with a quarter of them concentrated in New York and Los Angeles.
