The University of Southern California (USC) Viterbi School of Engineering and Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India (BITS Pilani), have formalized a strategic global partnership aimed at advancing research, education, and innovation.
The collaboration will strengthen academic ties between the two institutions and create joint opportunities for students, researchers, and faculty. Key initiatives include the launch of a combined Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Master of Science (M.S.) program, short-term student exchanges, and cross-institutional faculty visits, a University statement said.

BITS Pilani students will be eligible to enter the M.S. program at USC Viterbi after completing three years of undergraduate study. These students will finish their B.E. requirements while beginning their M.S. coursework under USC faculty mentorship. Additionally, a short-term exchange will enable USC students to spend two weeks on BITS Pilani campuses, participating in academic and cultural programs.
“This partnership with BITS Pilani exemplifies our commitment to building global alliances that advance research and innovation. By combining the expertise and vision of both institutions, we aim to create transformative opportunities for students and faculty while addressing some of the most complex challenges of our time,” said Yannis C. Yortsos, dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.
BITS Pilani Group vice chancellor professor Ramgopal Rao called the alliance a milestone in expanding global opportunities. “By combining the strengths of both institutions, we aim to foster innovation, enhance learning experiences and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of education and research,” he said.
The partnership also encourages collaborative research in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, quantum computing, and sustainable engineering.
