Indian-origin pharmacologist Shankar Munusamy has been awarded the 2025 Pharmacology Educators Award by the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET).
Munusamy, professor of pharmacology at Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, was honored for advancing pharmacology education through innovative teaching methods, including gamification and mindfulness, and for his commitment to fostering critical thinking and student well-being.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” said Munusamy, who currently serves as the college’s director of assessment. “I am grateful to my students, mentors, and colleagues who have inspired and supported me along the way. A heartfelt thanks to ASPET for recognizing educators who inspire excellence in pharmacology education!”
Known for using diverse teaching tools—such as mnemonics, analogies, gamification, and student-response systems—Munusamy’s educational research explores how these methods impact knowledge retention and clinical application. He has also investigated mindfulness exercises and wellness messages as part of his broader focus on student health and the integration of artificial intelligence in pharmacy education.
His innovative efforts have previously earned him multiple awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s Biological Sciences Section. At Drake, he has been honored with the Hartig Distinguished Professor title as well as Teacher of the Year and Mentor of the Year awards.
ASPET is a professional scientific society founded in 1908 that supports research and education in pharmacology and related biomedical sciences. With thousands of members worldwide, it promotes scientific discovery, the dissemination of knowledge, and professional development. The society publishes several leading journals and organizes annual meetings, workshops, and awards to recognize excellence in teaching, research, and service within the field of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics.
