Stop AAPI Hate, a civil rights group, has filed a class action lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for abruptly terminating over $810 million in public safety grants awarded to nonprofits.

The lawsuit, filed on May 22, alleges that the DOJ unlawfully revoked funding meant for more than 200 community organizations working to counter hate, support victims of crime, and improve public safety.

Stop AAPI Hate, which had received a $2 million grant in 2024, said it had already begun implementing projects like tracking anti-Asian hate incidents, increasing transit safety, and offering survivor support when the DOJ halted the funds without prior notice or explanation.

The funding was made available through a congressional appropriation following a spike in anti-AAPI violence during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This isn’t a budget cut – it’s a betrayal,” Stop AAPI Hate said. “It undermines the will of Congress, violates the law, erodes public trust, and harms communities most often targeted with hate and violence, including people of color, immigrants, and other vulnerable groups.”

The lawsuit, filed in coordination with Democracy Forward, challenges what plaintiffs say was the DOJ’s abrupt and unexplained revocation of funding awarded under a federal initiative to enhance public safety and address rising hate crimes, particularly against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.

It represents more than 200 organizations that had been relying on these grants to support safety and justice work in communities nationwide. Other plaintiffs include the Children and Youth Justice Center, FORCE Detroit, Health Resources in Action, and the Vera Institute of Justice.

“This is a fight for the justice and safety that all our communities deserve,” Stop AAPI Hate said. “The children, parents, friends, and neighbors we serve deserve better.”
