Police say Harpal Singh remains in critical condition after being attacked with a golf club on Aug.4.
According to KCAL, the victim, Harpal Singh, is in critical condition and has already undergone at least three surgeries. Singh, who lived at a local Sikh house of worship, was reportedly attacked around 3 p.m. by a man riding a bicycle and wielding a golf club.
A witness told police that Singh was struck violently. Authorities have not yet released a clear suspect description. KCAL said the family believes the incident has deeply shaken the local Sikh community.
“It has a chilling effect. It’s terrifying when something like this occurs,” attorney Munmeeth Kaur told KCAL. “We’re all on edge, especially when it occurs amongst the most vulnerable within our population. This was a 70-year-old man.”
KCAL reported that Singh is unconscious, preventing his family from providing investigators with a description of the attacker. They also said they have not been informed whether LAPD has recovered any security footage from the scene. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the North Hollywood Division.
The Sikh Coalition said it is aware of and “deeply disturbed” by what it called an apparent hate-motivated attack on an elderly Sikh man in Los Angeles.
In a statement, the advocacy group said, “We are in contact with the family of the survivor and working with them to provide support as needed.”
