Report shows AANHPI youth at risk amid mental health strain

Over half of Youth and Young Adults of Color face depression or anxiety; 91 percent report racial trauma.

More than 50 percent of Youth and Young Adults of Color (YYAC) reported experiencing moderate to severe depression or anxiety, and 37 percent said they had suicidal thoughts in the past year, according to the 2025 State of Mental Health of Youth and Young Adults of Color (SOMHYOC) report released by The AAKOMA Project. 

Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) youth account for 16.9 percent of participants in this landmark new study.
