Indian American ophthalmologist and founder-president of the Eye Foundation of America (EFA), V.K. Raju emphasized the importance of Yoga in his global mission to eliminate avoidable childhood blindness.
“Yoga is one of India’s greatest gifts to humanity,” said Raju ahead of International Yoga Day. “It is a timeless science of balance, healing, and inner clarity. Its philosophy perfectly aligns with our mission at EFA—to eliminate avoidable childhood blindness and promote holistic, preventive healthcare for all.”

Highlighting the deeper dimensions of the ancient practice, Raju noted, “While Hatha Yoga represents the physical dimension of the practice, the essence of Yoga lies in union—of body, mind, and spirit. True Yoga nurtures compassion, resilience, and harmony—core values that are critical to both public health and human dignity.”
Having impacted over 4 million individuals in 30 countries, EFA now incorporates yoga as a complementary therapy for patients with vision impairment and chronic illness. Raju stressed that introducing yoga into schools, clinics, and communities could create healthier societies and transcend borders.
“By combining ancient wisdom with scientific innovation, we can build healthcare systems that are more empathetic, inclusive, and sustainable,” he said. He also appealed to the Indian diaspora, calling them “living bridges between civilizations,” capable of spreading yoga’s healing philosophy worldwide.
Through initiatives in India, Africa, and beyond, EFA is advancing yoga, mindfulness, and health education among underserved children. “On this International Yoga Day, let us open our hearts and align our energies. Let us commit to a world where vision, vitality, and values flourish together,” Raju added.
Founded in 1977, the Eye Foundation of America is a U.S.-based non-profit organization committed to eradicating avoidable childhood blindness and delivering quality eye care to underserved populations globally, through education, innovation, and collaborative partnerships.
