The National Federation of Indian Associations (NFIA), a prominent Indian American community organization based in the United States, has denounced the online trolling of India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri following the Indian government’s decision to implement a ceasefire agreement with Pakistan.
The ceasefire, declared after what the government termed a decisive military response, was described by the NFIA as a "strategic and sovereign move" aimed at preserving peace and stability along the Line of Control (LoC). The group said Misri was simply carrying out his official duties as a senior civil servant executing government policy.
"The Foreign Secretary, acting in his official capacity, has merely executed the government’s policy — a duty he is entrusted with as a senior civil servant," the NFIA said in a statement issued from Atlanta.
Calling the trolling "unwarranted and senseless," the organization stressed that public servants, particularly those in sensitive diplomatic and security roles, should not be subjected to personal attacks.
"Targeted trolling and personal attacks not only undermine institutional integrity but also weaken public trust in the democratic decision-making process," the statement said.
The NFIA called for greater responsibility from the public and media, urging them to engage in civil and informed discourse.
"Constructive dialogue and informed debate are the hallmarks of a healthy democracy. However, vilifying individuals for decisions taken at the highest levels of government is both irresponsible and detrimental to national interest," the organization noted.
The group also extended its support to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and all public officials working to uphold the Indian Constitution, calling their efforts professional and dedicated.
