Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander are the two highest-ranking progressive candidates in the race. The appeal came after the final Democratic primary debate during which both Mamdani and Lander attacked Cuomo, whereas Cuomo kept the majority of his focus on Mamdani, who is his closest competition.

Talking about the cross-voting appeal, Mamdani said on X, “We know what we have to do to save our city from Andrew Cuomo.”

Lander also declared the decision on twitter and said, “Our campaign’s momentum is UNSTOPPABLE. Today @ZohranKMamdani (Mamdani) and I are officially cross-endorsing each other to join forces — and defeat @andrewcuomo (Cuomo).

This primary, New York city would be using Ranked-Choice voting for the second time in its history.  The system allows voters to rank up to five candidates in order of preference. While counting, the contenders with the fewest votes are eliminated round by round, with their support redistributed until one of them surpasses the 50 percent threshold.

Mamdani took to twitter to urge his voters to rank other candidates and said “Don’t just rank me — fill out the rest of your ballot.”

In the video explanation, he pointed to graphics of Brad Lander, Eric Adams and Zellnor Myrie and campaigned for placing them on the second, third and fourth position.
