Johns Hopkins University’s Indian classical dance team, Shakti, won first place at the 2024 Origins National Dance Championship held in Chicago last month.
The team’s Bharatanatyam-based routine, choreographed by co-captains Ananya Ashok, Maya Britto, and Simren Shah, told the story of a young girl who defies caste-based temple restrictions and is ultimately killed for her act of resistance.
