‘It was my Dharma to lead’: Sunak delivers Stanford address with wife Akshata
The Indian origin couple, who married in 2009, structured their address around three lessons — data, dreams, and dharma.

Indian-origin couple Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty returned to Stanford University, where they first met as MBA students, to deliver the commencement address at the Graduate School of Business on June 14. Speaking to the Class of 2025 at Frost Amphitheater, the couple reflected on the idea of dharma, a Sanskrit word they described as the duty to act without attachment to outcomes.
“Dharma,” Sunak said, “is the idea that we should gain fulfillment from simply doing our personal duty, rather than from the rewards that may come with our efforts.” He recalled how, when given the chance to lead the United Kingdom during a political crisis, “Akshata reminded me that my dharma was clear: It was my duty to do the job because I felt I could help my country in a very difficult situation.”
