Indiaspora has issued a strong statement condemning the racist backlash against Mathura Sridharan, an Indian American attorney recently appointed as Solicitor General of Ohio. The nonprofit said Sridharan is facing online attacks targeting her heritage and faith, after her appointment was announced on July 31 by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

“Since the announcement, Ms. Sridharan has faced racist attacks over her heritage and religion,” Indiaspora said, adding that her selection by Yost was based on qualifications, not appearance. “Indiaspora reiterates AG Yost’s statement and underscores the message that American identity is about merit, not appearance.”

Sridharan, who will serve as Ohio’s top appellate lawyer, earned engineering degrees from MIT and a law degree from NYU in 2018. She has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court and is widely respected for her legal expertise.

The controversy began when Yost praised Sridharan on X, calling her “brilliant” and saying she “will serve the state well.” The post attracted racist comments, with some users questioning her Americanness and mocking her Hindu identity, particularly her wearing of a bindi.

Yost issued a pointed response, stating that “suggestions that she’s not American are incorrect.” He added, “If someone’s bothered by her complexion or her name, the problem is with them, not her.”

Indiaspora called the racist comments “unacceptable and disheartening”, and said such rhetoric must not be normalized.

“It is disappointing to see baseless accusations that question her American identity or suggest that wearing a bindi makes her a threat,” the group said. “Racist trolls have long sought to poison our national discourse with xenophobic and nativist commentary. It is especially disappointing to see these perspectives gain traction or become normalized in public discussions.”

The organization emphasized the importance of recognizing Indian Americans of all faiths who serve the public. “It is vital to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Indian Americans of all backgrounds and faiths who dedicate themselves to serving the public good.”
