Indian American interventional radiologist Mikin Patel has launched  the Joint and Vascular Institute in Illinois bringing advanced, minimally invasive outpatient care to the northern Chicago region.

The institute offers image-guided, non-surgical procedures for a wide range of conditions, including vascular disease, cancer, uterine fibroids, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), thyroid nodules, and internal hemorrhoids.

It also provides orthopedic embolization treatments for conditions such as frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, knee osteoarthritis, and hip bursitis, a statement said.

Designed to match the standards of academic medical centers, the Joint & Vascular Institute emphasizes patient convenience and safety, the release stated. Procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, do not require general anesthesia or hospital stays, and typically offer quicker recovery and reduced risk compared to traditional surgery. Most treatments are covered by Medicare and major insurance providers.

Patel, a former university professor, is nationally recognized for his expertise in vascular and interventional radiology. He co-founded the institute with fellow interventional radiologist Osman Ahmed, who serves as its clinical partner.

Patel completed his radiology residency at the University of Chicago Medicine and a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at Northwestern McGaw Medical Center. He previously served as assistant professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and later at the University of Chicago, where he trained physicians in advanced endovascular techniques.

“I’m excited to offer academic-level care to patients in the convenience of a patient-focused outpatient clinic,” Patel said in a statement.

In addition to his clinical practice, Patel has industry and research experience spanning diagnostic imaging, oncology-focused medical device development, and hospital-based quality improvement.

He holds a combined MD/MBA from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and economics from Cornell University. His early research included projects at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Cornell, along with roles at Abbott and Carle Foundation Hospital.
