Indian American Impact Fund has endorsed Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City, citing his economic justice platform and connection to immigrant and working-class communities across the city.
The announcement was made on June 11 by Chintan Patel, executive director of the Impact Fund. He called Mamdani’s campaign a critical opportunity for long-overlooked South Asian voters to assert their political strength in the upcoming Democratic primary.
“We’re thrilled to endorse Zohran Mamdani for mayor because he offers a clear vision to address the urgent economic challenges facing New Yorkers today,” Patel said. “His focus on affordability and economic justice resonates deeply across South Asian communities and beyond.”
Patel warned of broader national threats and described Mamdani as a necessary counterforce. “At a time when MAGA forces nationwide threaten to upend civil liberties and democratic values, we need a fighter like Zohran—someone who will stand up for fairness, protect our rights, and deliver solutions that work for all New Yorkers,” he said.
He added that the campaign represents a deeper political shift. “This campaign is about more than just winning an election—it’s about changing who gets seen, heard, and prioritized in City Hall. The path to victory runs through the long-overlooked South Asian community, and we’re thrilled to help mobilize this vital and growing electorate.”
Mamdani, a New York State Assemblymember representing Astoria, Queens since 2020, welcomed the endorsement. “I’m honored to have the support of the Indian American Impact Fund, which has been a national leader in building South Asian political power,” he said.
“As a South Asian, an immigrant, and a Muslim, I know how important it is to have leaders who reflect our communities and fight for our values,” Mamdani said. “This campaign is about building a bigger table—where every New Yorker feels seen, heard, and represented. From rising costs to threats against our rights, I’m ready to deliver a city government that works for all of us.”
Mamdani, who was born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1991 to Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and political scientist Mahmood Mamdani, moved to New York City at age seven. He later became a naturalized U.S. citizen and joined politics as a Democratic Socialist after college.
In early June, Mamdani also secured an endorsement from U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, signaling strong support from New York’s progressive base.
