Balaji Srinivasan, an Indian-American entrepreneur and author of ‘The Network State’ has acquired an island near Singapore. While he plans to set up ‘The Network School’ on the island, this takes him one step closer to creating the Network State – a nation for founders, techies and innovators.
A concept introduced by Balaji Srinivasan, the Network State is a highly aligned online community that crowdfunds physical territory globally and seeks diplomatic recognition as a sovereign entity, using blockchain and decentralized technologies.
Former CTO of Coinbase, Srinivasan is a prominent advocate for the Network State, promoting the idea of building new societies through digital communities and crypto-economics. His work, including his 2022 book ‘The Network State’, propels the idea of such a state.
Announcing the news, Srinivasan posted on X, saying. "Through the power of Bitcoin, we now have a beautiful island near Singapore where we’re building the Network School."
The school aims to articulate a vision of peace, trade, internationalism, and technology while expanding equality of opportunity around the world.

THE NETWORK SCHOOL

We got an island.
That’s right. Through the power of Bitcoin, we now have a beautiful island near Singapore where we’re building the Network School. We’re starting with a 90-day popup that runs from Sep 23 to Dec 23, right after the Network State Conference.… pic.twitter.com/3EJHC2drkq
Instagram user Dhairya Chheda, founder of website designing brand 'Wix Freaks', shared his experience of attending the Network School and described it as "nothing short of a paradise".
Chheda said, "I am truly grateful for my experience at the Network School. Being surrounded by remarkable individuals like @balajis , @bryanjohnson_ , and @vitalik.eth.official has been both inspiring and humbling."
He also added, "I am surrounded by inspiring individuals from diverse backgrounds, many of whom are entrepreneurs, startup founders, and innovators in web3 and blockchain. It’s invigorating to connect with like-minded people who share a vision for the future."
Designed to embody his "network state" philosophy, the school will create a physical, tech-driven community for techno-optimists, including remote workers, digital nomads, and engineers. This experimental "pop-up city" offers a 90-day program (with plans for a year-long version) focusing on continuous self-improvement through a "learn-burn-earn-fun" model, integrating cryptocurrency education, AI-driven projects and practical activities like coding and earning "proof-of-learn" NFTs.
In this model, the educator awards students an NFT token for successfully completing a course, overtime, building a crypto-resume for the student.
The school acquiring a physical space takes Srinivasan a step closer to realising his dream of the Network State. The state also seeks to follow a similar path, starting as a virtual community and then shifting to a physical space.
