The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations hosted a special event on June 10 highlighting India’s efforts toward disability inclusion.

The event titled “Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Fostering Sustainable Development”, spotlighted India’s commitment to inclusive development and global cooperation for disability rights.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish opened the event by emphasizing India’s flagship Accessible India Campaign, which aims to create universal accessibility for persons with disabilities.

He also commended the impactful work of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), popularly known as the Jaipur Foot Organization, for providing affordable and adaptable prosthetic limbs to millions across the world.

D.R. Mehta, founder and chief patron of BMVSS, provided an overview of the indigenously developed Jaipur Foot technology. He noted that its low-cost, high-functionality design has changed the lives of people with disabilities globally, particularly in the Global South.

Ambassador Satish Mehta, president of BMVSS, detailed the organization's collaboration with developing countries and its commitment to South-South cooperation.

Diplomatic representatives from Ethiopia, Guatemala, and Iraq shared their nations’ experiences in partnering with BMVSS to support disability inclusion in their own communities.

Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), founded in 1975, is the world’s largest organization providing free prosthetics, notably the Jaipur Foot. It offers mobility aids like artificial limbs, calipers, and wheelchairs to persons with disabilities, especially in developing countries, using low-cost, high-quality, and adaptable technology to restore mobility and dignity.

The event was held on the sidelines of the 18th session of the Conference of States Parties (COSP18) to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
