AMRIT builds on over five years of academic and research partnership between the two institutions. The initiative will focus on areas such as additive manufacturing, smart materials, lightweight composites, automation, and Industry 4.0 technologies. It also seeks to connect academic research with the needs of industry.
"AMRIT represents a forward-looking step in collaborative innovation, designed to equip India's manufacturing sector with the tools, talent, and technology to lead globally. It is an extension of a longstanding multidimensional partnership with Deakin University, and I expect great outcomes through it," said professor B.S. Murty, director, IIT Hyderabad.
With seed funding of AUD 150,000 (USD 98,000) from Deakin University and a matching AUD 75,000 (USD 49,000)from IITH, the initiative’s initial three-year phase will support research mobility, joint academic programs, and industry-focused workshops. Both institutions also plan to seek additional funding through Indian and Australian government bodies, including Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC) and Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF).
Professor Iain Martin, vice chancellor of Deakin University, noted, “It is an inspiring model of how international collaboration can empower research, innovation, and talent development to advance mutually beneficial outcomes.”
AMRIT will serve as a launchpad for joint doctoral and master’s programs, startup incubation, and collaborative supervision, reinforcing the deepening ties between IITH and Deakin. With 30 students already enrolled in the joint doctoral program, the partnership reflects a sustained commitment to co-creating globally relevant solutions.
This initiative positions India to emerge as a global hub for advanced manufacturing through impactful academia-industry collaboration.
