Virginia State Senator Ghazala Hashmi, the first Muslim woman elected to Virginia’s state legislature and a Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, has picked up momentum in the run-up to the June primary with three major endorsements this week. These endorsements underline her broad appeal across labor, women’s rights, and social justice communities.

Hashmi on May 7 shared that she had been endorsed by the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, a prominent environmental advocacy group.

She wrote: “While Trump and Musk are devastating our environmental protections and efforts to address climate change, I am running for Lieutenant Governor because Virginia must lead on protecting our environment for future generations.”

On May 8, she announced support from Vote Pro-Choice, a group focused on defending reproductive rights in the United States. In her tweet, Hashmi wrote: “Thanks to the disastrous Dobbs decision, our daughters have fewer rights than their mothers did. I’ll never stop fighting for reproductive health care. That’s why I carried and passed the Right to Contraception Act, and it’s why I’m proud to earn the endorsement of @VoteChoice!”

Later the same day, Hashmi shared her third endorsement from Her Bold Move, an organization that supports progressive women leaders. The organization said: “Senator Hashmi’s leadership has made a difference felt throughout the Commonwealth, and we are eager to see her lead with that same pragmatism, empathy, and bravery as Lt. Governor.”

Hashmi’s contenders in the race include Babur Lateef, Aaron Rouse, Victor Salgado, and Levar Stoney.

Senator Hashmi made history in 2019 by becoming the first Muslim and first South Asian American elected to the Virginia Senate, representing the 10th district. Following redistricting in 2021, she now serves the 15th district, which includes parts of Richmond City and Chesterfield County.

Before her tenure in the Senate, she had a 25-year career in academia, serving as a professor and founding director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.
