Filmmaker Nikhil Singh, director of the upcoming documentary ‘The Caste Rush’, will speak at a live webinar on Aug.2, hosted by the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA). The session begins at 12 PM EST (9 AM PST) and will take viewers behind the scenes of the film, which examines caste-based discrimination in Indian temples.
The hour-long documentary investigates Dalits and non-Brahmins who face restrictions at places of worship in India. Singh and his team traveled across the country to gather on-the-ground accounts and explore the realities behind these claims.
“The method of enquiry is Truth, The Whole Truth & Nothing but the Truth,” Singh states in the film’s description. “We visited all the four corners of India, documenting the current practices of ancient Indian temples vis-a-vis caste.”
The film raises questions like: Are Dalits not allowed in temples? Can non-Brahmins become priests? Singh’s approach includes interviews with community members, experts, and temple authorities, aiming to provide what he describes as a more balanced view of caste and religion in India.
According to CoHNA, the webinar will cover not only the research and challenges behind producing the documentary but also its relevance for North American audiences.
The organization claims the film offers “a deeper understanding of the issue through interviews, stories, and expert insights,” and aims to “help you get an alternate perspective on this complex topic that is often dominated by Hinduphobic narratives.”
