Chicago’s Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), which has been marking India’s Independence Day with community events since 1980, will hold its annual parade on Aug.24, along Devon Avenue. The celebration comes after a series of activities including a flag hoisting ceremony at Daley Plaza, a Tiranga car rally, and a patriotic gala.
The parade will begin at 10:30 am from the intersection of Devon and Western Avenue, with the official kick-off scheduled after 11:15 am. Organizers have advised participants and attendees to arrive early to avoid street closures and to take advantage of free parking available at Warren Park, 6601 N. Western Avenue.
The event is free to attend, and participants have been encouraged to walk with banners representing their organizations or businesses. “Bring your banner or car and showcase your organization or business,” FIA announced in its invitation, underscoring the parade’s role as both a cultural and community gathering.
This year’s celebration will also honor the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Invited guests of honor include Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Consul General Somnath Ghosh, Illinois State Senator Ram Villivalam, and Aldermen from Chicago’s 40th and 50th wards.
FIA officials highlighted the importance of marking India’s independence in a city with a large Indian diaspora. “March with us to honor those who sacrificed for our freedom,” the association noted. The dress code for participants is traditional Indian attire.
The Federation of Indian Associations, described as one of the largest umbrella organizations for Indian Americans in the Midwest, has emphasized its commitment to celebrating India’s independence through community engagement for more than four decades.
The parade will include floats, cultural performances, and participation from local organizations, with community leaders and business representatives also joining.
