Clemson names Ramesh Jeganathan nutrition sciences chair

He will lead FNPS by advancing research, mentoring faculty, and expanding graduate programs.

Clemson University has appointed Indian-American nutrition researcher Ramesh Jeganathan as chair of its Department of Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences (FNPS). 

As chair, Jeganathan said his priorities will include supporting faculty development and mentorship, strengthening research capabilities, enhancing student success, expanding graduate programs, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and growing partnerships with industry, government and alumni.

“I am committed to creating a thriving academic environment that elevates FNPS’s visibility, impact and external funding.  Mentorship is a cornerstone of my leadership, and I will continue to support students and faculty in achieving their professional goals,” he said. 

Jeganathan brings more than 25 years of academic and leadership experience to the role. He joins Clemson from Auburn University, where he served as the Bruno endowed professor of nutrition, graduate program director, interim co-associate dean for research and graduate studies, and Southeastern Conference provost fellow.

Matthew Holt, dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences, called Jeganathan “an ideal choice” for the position, citing his background in academic leadership, strategic planning, and securing competitive research funding. “Jeganathan brings a wealth of experience, vision and dedication to this role. We are confident that the department will continue to thrive, innovate and explore new horizons under his leadership,” Holt said. 

Holt expressed appreciation for professors Feng Chen and Julie Northcutt, who served as interim chairs prior to Jeganathan’s appointment. “Their steady leadership and commitment have positioned the department well for this next chapter,” he said.

Jeganathan holds his Ph.D., and M.Phil from the University of Madras, an M,S from Annamalai University, and a B.S. from the University of Madras.
