The American Sikh Council (ASC) representative Kavneet Singh raised concerns about rising gun violence at ‘Toll the Bell’ event organized by Penn Live Arts at the University of Pennsylvania on June 6, the National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Singh, in his address, underscored the need for the community to fight for better schools, housing and mental health support that could help to end the gun violence epidemic. Singh also shared a ‘shabad’ from the Guru Granth Sahib during his address.

The Interfaith Philadelphia’s Religious Leaders Council and Zones of Peace partnered with Penn Live Arts to host the event. ‘Toll the Bell’ is a multi-day program that brings awareness to the gun violence epidemic in Philadelphia and the rest of the country.

Many religious leaders associated with Interfaith Philadelphia were invited to speak and share their thoughts and prayers in solidarity with the victims of gun violence.

At 1 pm on June 6, there was a prolonged period of bell ringing and other community-driven sounds made across the city.

A collaboration between the Penn’s Office of the Chaplain, Interfaith Philadelphia and many faith-based organizations and other partners, this event serves as a warning and a sonic device to disrupt the environment for Philadelphians, inviting them to stop and reflect on this tragic issue.
