The Chicago chapter of the Akshaya Patra foundation on May 24 organized a meet and greet for its youth ambassadors. Fondly called “Yappies”, the youth ambassadors shared their passion for combating hunger and revitalized their commitment to the organization’s mission of ensuring that no child misses out on education due to hunger.
Akshaya Patra, an independent charitable trust, has been actively contributing to India’s mid-day meal program, serving over two million children across 20,000 government schools and Anganwadi centres. The youth ambassadors of the organization are key contributors to this effort. Brought together in Hinsdale, Illinois, the past and current youth ambassadors shared their experiences and shed light on how it developed their understanding of global hunger.
Anubha Panchal, the youth coordinator for the Chicago chapter, urged the attendees to visit the Akshaya Patra kitchens in India. “Seeing the work on the ground has a profound impact…it gives kids a real sense of the scale and significance of the program they are supporting.”
The experienced ambassadors shared heartfelt stories about the moments they felt the real-world impact of their efforts. One of the ambassadors, Anya Panchal, shared how her first fundraiser, though small, taught her the joy of giving and working for something bigger than herself. Another attendee spoke about the pride he felt when he explained Akshaya Patra’s mission to friends at school.
The organizers also announced plans for mini fundraisers such as awareness booths and community walks over the summer, hoping to expand outreach and involve more kids in the Chicago area with their efforts. The event closed with a renewed sense of purpose, as Yappies left motivated to drive change, one meal at a time.
