Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Aug.18 called his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump “a very successful day,” saying the discussions broke a deadlock and led to agreement on future talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“President Trump is a pragmatic peacemaker,” Zelensky said at a press conference following the White House meeting. “What he did this year, breaking the deadlock, starting the conversation with Putin, but also putting pressure… today was very successful. We discussed the security guarantees. We will work on those over the coming days, and then have another meeting virtually with this group of leaders and the President, and then we will work towards this trilateral.”
