Tufts Medical Center has named Kolkata-born physician-scientist Soma Sengupta as chair of the Department of Neurology and neurologist-in-chief.
Sengupta has also been proposed as chair and professor of neurology at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM).

Currently serving as professor and chief of the division of neuro-oncology and vice chair of neurosurgery research, Sengupta, in her advanced role will lead all neurological services, champion innovation in key areas such as epilepsy, stroke, and neurodegenerative disorders, and expand clinical trial access and educational opportunities across the health system.
Sengupta brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She was the principal investigator on over 30 federal and foundation grants and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and books.
Her laboratory research focuses on improving outcomes for brain tumor patients and targeting specific ion channels, as well as developing a new class of therapeutic drugs.
Sengupta holds a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Wales, a PhD and MBBChir from the University of Cambridge, and completed her neurology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Her advanced training includes clinical and research fellowships in neuro-oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, an integrative medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona, and a certificate in artificial intelligence in healthcare from MIT. She also earned an MBA from the University of Cincinnati and completed executive leadership training at Drexel University.
