TAAF condemns xenophobic and Islamophobic attacks against Mamdani

Republican leaders, including President Trump, have called for Mamdani's arrest and deportation without any valid evidence or claim.

The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) has issued a statement condemning the bigotry against Zohran Mamdani since his win in the democratic mayoral primary.

Standing a chance to be New York's first South-Asian and Muslim Mayor, Mamdani has faced death threats and other hateful rhetoric from not just the general public but also elected officials.

President Donald Trump had recently suggested Mamdani's arrest and deportation without offering any evidence that could raise questions about the latter’s citizenship. Rep. Andy Ogles also made a similar demand and received widespread backlash for the rhetoric.

Other comments like linking Mamdani's win to the 9/11 attacks, AI generated images of the Statue of Liberty in a burqa and shaming Mamdani for eating with his bare hands are also being openly aired by republican elected officials.

In a statement, TAAF said that it "strongly condemns the xenophobic and Islamophobic attacks directed at New York State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani following his historic win in the NYC Democratic mayoral primary".

It added, "South Asian and Muslim American communities have long been the targets of bigotry and discrimination, which intensified in the aftermath of 9/11 and continues to this day. TAAF rejects the normalization of harassment and discrimination directed towards any individuals or communities."

Pointing out the real world consequences of virtual hate-mongering, TAAF said, "We have seen time and time again that words can lead to real world consequences. When our leaders are risking their lives to serve, we hold our public figures with large platforms to a higher standard, expecting them to model the type of behaviors and language that our citizens should mirror."

TAAF also called for unity beyond faith and background so that all Americans "feel they can belong and live their lives with safety and dignity”.
