Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, Cyprus’s highest civilian honor, by President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on June 16.
The award, named after Cyprus’s first President, is a rare distinction reserved for individuals of exceptional global standing.
This marks the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Mediterranean island nation. Accepting the honour, Prime Minister Modi said he was humbled by the recognition and dedicated it to the 1.4 billion people of India.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the award reflects the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the ancient Indian philosophy of “The world is one family”—and reaffirmed India’s commitment to peace, unity, and shared global progress.
“I express my sincere gratitude to the Government and people of Cyprus for awarding me the 'Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III'. This is not my honor. It is an honor for 140 million Indians. I dedicate this award to the eternal friendship between India and Cyprus.Together, our nations will contribute to creating a better planet,” Modi said.

“We are both confident in the transformative potential of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. This Corridor will enhance peace and prosperity,” Modi said.
Earlier, Modi paid homage at the memorial of Makarios III, laid a floral wreath, and acknowledged Cyprus’s long-standing support for India at international forums, including on sensitive issues like Kashmir.
