For the first time in 17 years, Bakersfield, California, hosted the International Sikh Youth Symposium, a celebration of Sikh heritage, learning, and leadership.

Organized by the Sikh Youth Alliance of North America (SYANA), the four-day event at Gurdwara Guru Angad Darbar brought together 68 participants from across the U.S. and Canada, along with over 200 attendees, including families and community members.

Since 1999, SYANA has held these symposiums in stages, starting with local competitions, advancing to regional rounds, and culminating in the international finals each August. Sikh scholars, aged 6 to 22, showcased their knowledge through speeches, debates, and discussions on topics like Saka Chamkaur, Sikh Sakhis, and The Message of Gurbani.

The oldest group (16-22 years) engaged in a lively four-hour debate on Asa Ki Vaar, featuring structured arguments and cross-questions.

Manbir Singh, SYANA’s regional convener for California explained that the symposium not only deepens children’s understanding of Sikh history, Gurbani, faith, and heritage but also equips them with essential skills in public speaking, research, and critical thinking.

The symposium also drew notable guests, including Jasmeet Kaur Bains, the first Sikh woman elected to the California State Assembly, and Angad Singh, the 2025 National Speech and Debate Association’s Oratory Champion.

Kuldeep Singh, SYANA’s national convener, thanked volunteers, families, and the Gurdwara management for their support, calling the event a testament to the community’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of Sikh leaders.
