Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost appointed Indian-origin Mathura Sridharan as the state’s 12th solicitor general on July 31, making her the state’s top appellate attorney for cases in both state and federal courts.
The announcement was made in a post on X by Yost’s office, which stated, “AG Yost on July 31 named Mathura Sridharan as his pick for Ohio’s 12th solicitor general, the state’s top attorney for appeals in state and federal courts.”
Sridharan, an attorney of Indian origin, was previously serving as deputy solicitor general in the Ohio Solicitor General’s Office. She also leads Ohio’s Tenth Amendment Center, where she directs litigation on behalf of the state challenging what the office describes as “unlawful federal policies”.
Her appointment follows the US Senate’s confirmation of former Ohio Solicitor General T. Elliot Gaiser to lead the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice.
“Mathura is a relentless defender of Ohioans, a champion of federalism and a legal force to be reckoned with in a courtroom,” said Yost. “Her brilliant legal mind and masterful understanding of constitutional law make her the obvious choice to lead the team as Ohio’s solicitor general.”
Sridharan has argued appeals before the Ohio Supreme Court, the US Supreme Court, and several federal appellate courts, including the Sixth Circuit. Before joining the solicitor general’s office, she clerked for Judge Steven J. Menashi of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Judge Deborah A. Batts of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
According to The Federalist Society, Sridharan holds multiple degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, including bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering, computer science, and economics. She also earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT.
She received her Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law in 2018.
