India hosts special ‘chai’ event at UN HQ in New York

A curated selection of Indian teas marked the occasion.

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York hosted a special event at UNHQ themed “Tea for Livelihoods, Tea for SDGs” to mark International Tea Day recently.

In his remarks, Permanent Representative, Ambassador P. Harish underscored tea's transformative power as a catalyst for rural employment, women’s empowerment, and sustainable development. He highlighted India's leadership in harnessing technology for inclusive and climate-resilient tea economies, and acknowledged the pivotal role of institutions like the Tocklai Tea Research Institute in driving innovation and scientific progress in the sector.

Other speakers who shared their views on the subject included Angelica Jacome, Director of FAO, UN Liaison Office in New York, Ambassadors Dang from Vietnam, Lokaale of Kenya, and Charge d’Affaires Perera of Sri Lanka and Mamesah of Indonesia.

Liqun, Counsellor of China, who highlighted the tea industry's vital contribution to Agenda 2030, particularly its role in livelihood generation and women’s empowerment.

Permanent Representatives Sunil Sitaldin of Suriname, Joan Forner of Andorra, Michel Xavier Biang for IOF and Gheorghe Leuca of Moldova and Deputy Permanent Representative PR David Abesadze of Georgia also attended the event.

The event concluded with a curated tea tasting experience, where participants sampled a rich selection of Indian teas — Assam, Darjeeling, Nilgiri and Masala Chai.
