In a historic moment commemorating India's 79th Independence Day, the Consulate of India in Seattle hoisted the tricolor on the city’s iconic Space Needle.
It was the first instance of the Tricolor being displayed on the 1962 landmark, a defining feature of the city’s skyline. The event was attended by the Consul General of India in Seattle, Prakash Gupta, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, and other senior city officials.

A community gathering followed at Kerry Park, where the flag remained visible against the backdrop of the skyline. U.S. Congressman Adam Smith, Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra L. Stephens, and Seattle Parks and Recreation Director A.P. Diaz were among those present.

Congressman Smith, who represents Washington's 9th congressional district, described the occasion as a recognition of the city’s diversity and of ties between India and the Pacific Northwest.
The programme included the national anthems of both countries, cultural performances, and a recital by actor and artist Piyush Mishra.

Participants gathered at Kerry Park to celebrate the historic occasion of Indian tricolor raised atop Space Needle / indiainseattle.govTo mark the occasion, King County and the cities of Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, and Bellevue issued proclamations designating August 15 as India Day. The Tricolor was also raised at the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma City Hall, and the headquarters of Tacoma’s Police and Fire Departments.

India opened its sixth U.S. consulate in Seattle in November 2023, expanding diplomatic engagement in the Pacific Northwest.

The Space Needle, originally constructed in 1962 for the World’s Fair, remains a signature symbol of Seattle’s skyline and the region’s technological aspirations. The unprecedented flag-raising was seen as both a gesture of cultural diplomacy and a recognition of the Indian American community’s contributions to the region’s development.
