Shivee, an Indian woman living in San Francisco, went viral after posting on Instagram about her family’s monthly grocery spending of $935. The video, shared in early September, detailed the August expenses of her vegetarian household of four.
In the post, she explained that she prepares nearly all meals at home, including packed lunches for herself and her daughters, which keeps food delivery bills under $50. “Monthly grocery as a vegetarian family of 4 in San Francisco,” she wrote in the caption.
Shivee said her shopping took place across several outlets. She spent $225 at Indian grocery stores, $154 on a one-time online Costco order, $351 at Safeway and Trader Joe’s, and around $120 at a local farmer’s market. She added a 10 percent estimate for miscellaneous items to reach the $935 total.
The video drew wide attention online, prompting discussions about grocery costs in the United States. Some viewers said her spending was reasonable compared to their own experiences, while others remarked that dining out often made their budgets higher.
One user commented, “Pretty similar to what we spend monthly on our groceries in Sacramento. Trader Joe's has helped keep our fresh produce budget under check – good quality at cheaper prices compared to Safeway & Whole Foods.”
“Really enjoying your posts. We are a vegetarian family of four, and I use Sprouts and Aldi for good produce at reasonable prices,” another added.
Others noted that her figure appeared lower than average. “It's much less, I would say, if you guys are eating at home the entire month. We end up spending around 1500 every month along with eating out here and there,” a commenter wrote.
