“As bad as it could get”: Satish Jha on India’s education crisis

India is decades behind countries like China and South Korea in terms of education outcomes, despite starting at a similar economic level in 1947, says veteran journalist and education advocate Satish Jha.
Saying that education in India is as bad as it could get, he added, “We began our journey in 1947 along with China and Korea… and 75 plus years later, we are at $2,500 per capita income, China at between $30,000, Korea at $36,000 to $40,000, all because China focused on education and we did not,” Jha said in an interview. “At the most, 1–2 percent of Indians get an education which allows them to seek newer pastures. The rest… remain where they were.”
