Seventeen Indian startups have joined the 21st cohort of the Nexus Pre-Incubation Program, a flagship initiative supported by the US Embassy in New Delhi to connect Indian entrepreneurs with American research, investment, and technology networks.

The nine-week program kicked off this week at the Nexus Incubator Hub located on Kasturba Gandhi Marg.

Nexus is a startup hub launched by the US Embassy to foster collaboration between Indian and American entrepreneurship and promote innovation and technology commercialization. It serves as a gathering space for startups, industry experts, government agencies, faculty, and investors.

During the program, participating founders will receive what Nexus describes as “hands-on training, world-class mentorship, and access to a global network of changemakers.” The cohort, known as Nexus Cohort 21, is part of the incubator's effort to build what it calls “enduring prosperity” by supporting innovative Indian ventures.

The program begins with a pre-incubation phase lasting nine weeks, where up to 15 startups are selected. Two team members from each startup are allowed to participate in day-to-day mentoring and training sessions at the Nexus hub.

“We will work together with you to sharpen your value proposition, define your target market, get market feedback on your product/technology and create and achieve milestones to bring your company to the market,” the program description reads. “A key part of our methodology is ‘getting out of the building’ to collect real market data and the voice of the customer.”

After this initial phase, three to four startups will be chosen for an extended incubation period of up to eight months. These startups will receive continued support to refine their product, expand their customer base, and seek funding to scale operations.

Startups across sectors are encouraged to apply, although the program notes that those in pharmaceutical and drug discovery may face longer time-to-market hurdles that make them less suited for Nexus. The incubator favors companies with innovative components and a clear, quantifiable value proposition—typically those operating in a business-to-business (B2B) model.

In addition to startup support, Nexus also offers training for incubator managers in six Indian cities, equipping them with tools to manage incubators and nurture entrepreneurial talent in their regions.
