Bhargava, professor of bioengineering and Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering, received the award for his transformative contributions in research and development. As the founding director of the Cancer Center at Illinois (CCIL), he has played a central role in shaping the university’s research strategy in cancer studies.
Under his leadership, the CCIL grew from a visionary concept into a interdisciplinary hub involving over 120 faculty and hundreds of students and researchers, the university said in a statement.. His strategic collaborations and innovative initiatives have elevated Illinois' standing in biomedical research, leading to landmark federal grants, cutting-edge educational programs, and new infrastructure — all aimed at translating scientific discovery into real-world health solutions.
Adve, Donald B. Gillies Professor of Computer Science, was honored with the highest recognition for shared governance and institutional advancement. He has been instrumental in spearheading interdisciplinary collaboration between computing and agriculture, founding the Center for Digital Agriculture (CDA) in 2018.
Under his guidance, CDA grew from a grassroots initiative to an internationally acclaimed research center, securing over $36 million in external funding. He further led the creation of the AIFARMS Institute, which applies AI to address global challenges in agriculture, including autonomous farming and climate resilience.
