Two Indian-origin Canadians among Order of Canada honorees
The honorees include professors Saroj Saigal and Mahesh Chandra Sharma.

Two Indian-origin Canadians are among the 83 distinguished individuals appointed to the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor.
The honorees, announced by Governor General of Canada Mary Simon, include Saroj Saigal, professor emerita at McMaster University in Hamilton, and professor Mahesh Chandra Sharma, longtime faculty member at Concordia University in Montréal.

Saigal has been named an Officer of the Order for her groundbreaking work in neonatology. She is internationally recognized as the first researcher to study the lives of extremely premature infants from a qualitative perspective and is praised for her humanistic approach.

Her research has shifted clinical attitudes and deepened understanding of long-term outcomes for preterm children. She also played a key role in establishing neonatal intensive care services in Hamilton and continues to serve in follow-up clinics more than five decades into her career.
Sharma has been appointed a Member of the Order. A respected academic and community advocate, he established scholarships in memory of his wife, two daughters and mother-in-law, who were among the victims of the 1985 Air India Flight 182 bombing.
Described in the official citation as “a civic-minded philanthropist and leader,” he is also recognized for championing social causes and supporting vulnerable individuals in Québec. Sharma joined Concordia University in 1975 and has also worked in industry and government.
Simon announced a total of 83 new appointments, including two Companions, 19 Officers and 62 Members. “Congratulations to the newest appointees to the Order of Canada,” she said. “We proudly recognize each of these individuals whose dedication and passion for service not only enrich our communities but also help shape the fabric of our nation.”
Established in 1967, the Order of Canada has honored more than 8,200 individuals for outstanding contributions to Canadian society. Investiture ceremonies for the 2025 appointees will take place later this year.
