Tesla’s Indian-origin chief financial officer, Vaibhav Taneja, has been named treasurer of Elon Musk’s newly-formed America Party, according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). The party was launched in early July following Musk’s public disagreement with President Donald Trump over the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’.

The FEC filing lists the America Party’s headquarters at 1 Rocker Road, Hawthorne, California. Taneja is identified as both the party’s treasurer and custodian of records. A Tesla address associated with him appears in the official paperwork and has circulated on social media.

The America Party was officially announced by Musk shortly after Trump signed the controversial bill into law. In a post on X, Musk wrote, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Musk is currently the party’s only declared candidate.

As treasurer, Taneja will oversee the party’s finances. This includes managing contributions, tracking expenditures, and ensuring compliance with federal campaign finance regulations. The treasurer is responsible for maintaining detailed records of all transactions and guarding against any unlawful financial activity.

Taneja, who took over as Tesla’s CFO in August 2023 after the departure of Zach Kirkhorn, has extensive experience in corporate financial management. He joined Tesla in 2017 through its acquisition of SolarCity and later served as Chief Accounting Officer and Corporate Controller.

Before his time at Tesla, Taneja spent nearly 17 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he advised major corporations on financial strategy and regulatory matters.
