“Pride Month began as a commemoration of the Stonewall Riots and the struggle for LGBTQIA+ equality,” said Cathy Williams, Chair of the Hoboken Pride Advisory Committee.
Noting the challenges faced by the members of the LGBTQIA+ community, she added, “We’re reminded on a near-daily basis that this struggle is ongoing, as more and more legal rights and protections for the LGBTQIA+ community are taken away. Pride Month is also about visibility, celebration, and community building and we are thrilled that this June, the City is offering more ways than ever for LGBTQIA+ community members, friends, and allies to come together to show our Pride.”
As part of the celebration, Puppies and Pride Family Parade would be held on June 7 at Waterfront Walkway at Pier C. Humans and puppies are encouraged to dress in all the colors of the rainbow and march in celebration of pride.
On June 8, Pride Crosswalk Painting would be organized at First and Washington Streets, the efforts would be led by a professional team and members of the community are invited to join.
Family Drag Bingo is scheduled for June 24 at 770 Jackson Plaza. Drag queen Harmonica Sunbeam would lead an evening of Bingo for the families.
A screening of “To Wong Foo...” has been scheduled for June 25 at Pier A. This would be a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the movie’s release.
This year’s celebration would conclude at Sinatra Park on June 26 with a Community Drag Karaoke Party hosted by drag queen Saline Dijon.
Hoboken mayor Ravi S. Bhalla was elected to office in 2017 and has since been an active supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community. He established the Hoboken Pride Advisory Committee in 2024. In addition to organizing Pride Month events, the committee works to promote inclusiveness, raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ community issues, propose solutions to address those issues, and enhance the pride community within the City.
